Fishing in the Cape – December 2011

Share

Ok so in December we took a bit of time off and of course managed to fish a few spots in and around Cape town.

Doordekraal
First up was Doordekraal where  we enjoyed a great afternoons fishing with some nice fish being caught mostly on the wacky rig.

Paarl Farm Dam

Myself and my wife Kim then enjoyed an afternoon  fishing  a farm dam in Paarl.  The fish were really active, jumping out the water and smoking dragonflies that were trying to lay their eggs. All you had to do was wait for a fish to jump, then throw a weightless fluke at the area, wait 2 seconds and fish on.  Exhilarating! We caught 27 fish between the two of us in 4 hours. Many little guys but one or two keepers showed themselves.

For an idea of what we experienced check out these cool photos.

I spent Sunday afternoon at the same venue with a few mates and we nailed them again using similar methods.

Western Cape Stream-SmalBlaar Beat 6

Then for a spot of wild trout on the Smalblaar beat 6. What a great day! We hammered the trout on nymph and a few took surface fly. I even managed to get 2 nice smallmouth bass. I let them go, sorry CPS , but smallies are my favourite fish to catch.

Kwaggas Quickie
Then off to Kwaggaskloof with some friends, the main aim was to ski and wakeboard, but during lunch we dropped in on Smallie Bay for a quick fish. First cast with my jig I got hit, sadly I was sleeping, or trying to open a beer I can’t remember. Had a few good knocks but no commitment, they also kept taking the tail off the trailing grub I was using so I tossed the jig and kept the grub but rigged it mojo and got a very nice hit from a healthy smallie weighing in at around 1KG. It was a good day for fishing as the fish seemed to be very active despite the heat.

How was your december fishing? Please let us know, we would love to hear from you.
